After our client has chosen the perfect interior paint color scheme for each room , there’s another very important decision to make. There are several sheens/finishes to choose from, ACN Painting LLC will provide the benefits of each interior paint finish and you will determine the ones you would like. Below, are the types of interior paint finishes that can be used in your home, and a segment about each finish.

Flat (0-10% Sheen)

Flat is an interior paint with little or no sheen. Many people who do not like shine prefer this finish. Although it touched up better than any other sheen, it has very little or no washability and tends to scuff easier especially in higher traffic areas. . This is a good interior paint finish if you have to camouflage small wall bumps, cracks, or other imperfections, as this finish does not reflect light.

Matte/Velvet Finish (10-20% Sheen)

This type of interior paint has a bit more washability than flat and less shine than eggshell. Probably one of the most popular among both residential and commercial work lately. This paint finish is usually used on interior walls. Can be also categorized as “low luster”.

Eggshell Finish (20-30% Sheen)

If you can picture the very low sheen of the shell of an egg, you have an idea of how an eggshell paint finish is supposed to appear. Personally, I believe eggshells have gotten shinier over the years than where they started. Most are pretty right at 30%, yet some are even closer to 40%, depending on which carrier. In fact, Sherwin Williams, a few years back consolidated eggshell and satin finishes by considering them one and the same. They removed either eggshell or satin from all lines and had only one or the other. With a bit more shine or gloss, it’s good for walls and holds up much better to washing than a flat finish paint.

Satin Finish (40% Sheen)

Satin interior paint finish has a shiny look with a bit less gloss than semi-gloss. It is most often used for windows, doors, trim, or wet area ceilings, but can also be used as wall paint. This is particularly suitable for kids’ room walls, kitchens, and bathrooms, or in areas which get a lot of traffic. Some homowners also do their entire exteriors in Satin and is excellent for exterior doors as well. Satin interior paint finish is formulated to hold up to cleaning and scrubbing.

Semi-Gloss (50% Sheen)

Semi-gloss interior paint finish is most often used on doors, trim, and cabinets in kitchens and bathrooms. It is easily cleaned and lays down a nice, subtle shine, without being too glossy.

Gloss and High-Gloss (60% and 70% respectively)

Gloss and High gloss interior paint finishes have a reflective, almost mirror-like quality. These finishes were very popular pre-1980’s especially with the use of oil base products.Though not widely used in home interiors today, it is becoming more popular for a dramatic look on wood cabinets, trim, and furniture in very formal and very contemporary settings.  This is the most rock hard and durable of all finishes.
